A few weeks ago Ubisoft released a video of Assassin’s Creed 3. The video showed off the new city of Boston and was essentially a walkthrough of the changes that had been made with commentary from one of the game designers.
Today Ubisoft have released a similar video for Far Cry 3
With commentary by Ditte, one of the designers for Far Cry 3 we get a look at how Ubisoft have implemented co-op for the first time in what has been traditionally a single player game.
Taking a leaf out of Mass Effect 3‘s multiplayer, Ubisoft have designed a completely separate group of characters specifically for this mode. The story takes place six months before the single player campaign and introduces us to four characters who have teamed up in order to get back the money they have had stolen from them. Each scenario and location has been created with co-op in mind so there won’t be any cross over with the single player mode.
Ubisoft are also hammering home that this is co-op and not multiplayer, while there are the traditional times when you can get competitive with your team mates, the majority of co-op are team missions and objectives. Two that are seen in the walk through show three of the four characters laying down covering fire while the fourth player goes to complete the mission. In the second mission shown, players have to load explosives onto a bridge, the players carrying the explosives cannot protect themselves so the best way to complete the mission is to have two players carrying the explosives while the other two cover them. The emphasis is definitely on team work rather than just watching your own back.
I’m not a huge co-op/multiplayer fan, for me gaming is about the story, so it’s good to see developers putting more and more effort into this side and beginning to craft original and interesting plots.

The games industry today is abuzz with talk of the next generation of gaming. Computer games, as much as any other medium, are mysterious things. They can stir our souls, hotwire our adrenaline glands or disappoint us to our core. For every person who plays a game there is a valid and varied opinion. It’s one of the things that make the subject of a game’s relative quality a [...]
Across every genre of entertainment there are specific titles or releases that become synonymous with failure, that in the eyes of fans and critics alike embody the worst that the genre has to offer. They become the universal butt of any joke in that medium, the yardstick against which every other poorly-received release is measured. [...]
Over recent years there has been a shift in the focus of the gaming industry towards online multiplayer as a gaming model. Indeed, the biggest sellers of this generation of titles have been primarily online competitive titles, such as Halo 4 & Call of Duty. Over this time there has developed a very distinct separation [...]
