Broken Age is a point-and-click adventure game, created by Double Fine Productions available on PlayStation 4, PC, and mobile. It follows the story of two teenagers living in different worlds, each striving to break away from the customs that rule their everyday lives. It was this story idea that drew me into Broken Age in the first place. Thankfully, I am not disappointed by the overall narrative. At its heart it is a coming of age story about learning to be your own person regardless of what others think. Weaved within that idea is another story about two seemingly different worlds colliding and unlikely friendships. The entire game works like a play with an Act 1 and an Act 2 of gameplay. And may I just say the transition between the two acts, completely blindsided me. I had to take a moment, sit back, and think ‘Woah.’
Imagine you lose your eyesight in a tragic accident and ultimately have to rediscover the world around you. Imagine all of the fright, frustration, and exhilaration that comes along with that experience. This concept is dealt with in the PS4, Xbox One, and PC game known as Beyond Eyes developed by tiger & squid. The game artistically portrays the tale of Rae, a 10 year-old girl who lost her eyesight in an accident. She’s grown afraid and anxious of the world she can no longer see and due to this she likes to keep to herself within her garden. However, the sudden absence of her one friend leads her outside of the gates of her garden into the unknown that lays ahead, in search of them.

Recently, I have been playing an online game, currently in alpha testing, called Exploit: Zero Day and I have to say it has definitely been an enjoyable experience. EZD was created by Future Proof Games, who also did Ossuary, which I have previously reviewed. The game itself has a great concept. Basically, you are a part of this group called Zero Day, they are your modern tech savvy Robin Hood and his merry men. A group of hackers that steal from the rich and give to the poor; the voice of the silenced. EZD does a great job of making a compelling story and backstory with this concept. Future Proof Games pays very close attention to detail making the story believable. For example, your main adversary in the game is the company, Samsara Digital, and there is an actual website to accompany the business, breathing life into the fictional company. The narrative also allows for roleplaying as you can choose how to respond to those you are in contact with, are you going to look the other way or speak up? Who will you work for and against?
Alphabear: Word Puzzle Game is a mobile app created by Spry Fox. It’s another word game, like scrabble and words with friends; however, much more entertaining. I was drawn in to the game by the adorable bears as they hopped, smiled, and made cute little noises. What can I say, the schoolgirl in me could not help but squeal in joy.
